Overview
The 1864 Red River campaign in Louisiana is a unique example of military objectives taking a back seat to economic and political objectives. Rumors were flying that vast amounts of baled cotton were available for the taking along the Red River. Leaders of the Union Army saw this as one more reason to invade Louisiana.
General Nathaniel Banks and his troops were sent up the Red River to invade Shreveport. What followed was a disastrous campaign by Banks as he was soundly beaten at the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, and narrowly escaped with his army intact.
Today we can study this campaign in the luxury of the legendary Delta Queen. Onboard historians will provide the background information and shore tours will enhance your experience as you sail on the Mississippi, Ouachita, and Red rivers.
